Formula Student is a competition for students to design and produce a single seat racing car. Every year it brings engineering students together across different fields, including Automotive, Mechanical and Electronic.

University of Sussex International Study Centre students also have the opportunity to take part in the competition, which is organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Cars are then raced at the home of British Motor Racing, Silverstone.

Study Mechanical Engineering: Talal’s story

Talal talks about his experience studying Mechanical Engineering at Sussex and the F1 car project. He studied International Foundation Year in Engineering and Mathematics and has since graduated with BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering.

What is Formula Student?

Watch the highlights from the 2018 Formula Student event in Silverstone:

I was really keen to work on cars and machines. Whenever my parents used to buy anything from a store, maybe a radio or a telephone, the next day it would be in my hands and I would open it up with a screwdriver. This made me feel like working towards mechanical engineering.”
