Posted 15 March 2018

For the second year in a row, the University of Sussex has ranked first for international development courses and research in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. This is also the fourth year running that Sussex ranked in the top two universities globally for development studies. The QS World University Rankings by Subject evaluate academic and employer reputation, research and the quality of work published by academics at universities.

Professor Andrea Cornwall, Head of the School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex, said: “I'm delighted to see our excellence in development studies recognised in this way. It's a real testament to the wonderful work that our inspiring and committed colleagues across the University of Sussex campus are doing.”

These rankings highlight the world-leading research that students benefit from during their time at Sussex. They are also directly related to the enduring partnership between the University and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS).

Melissa Leach, IDS Director, said: “The range of postgraduate teaching programmes that IDS and Sussex offer, alongside our world-class research, are going from strength to strength. Together we are offering solutions to pressing global challenges such as sustainability and inequality and nurturing the next generation of leaders who will continue this much needed work.”

As well as the subjects offered by the School of Global Studies, seven other subjects at Sussex also feature in the world’s top 100 universities, including:

  • Anthropology
  • Communication and Media Studies
  • English Language and Literature
  • Geography
  • History
  • Politics and International Studies
  • Sociology
