Why the International Year One?

The International Year One is a course offered at the University of Sussex International Study Centre that is equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree. Its aim is to fully prepare you for joining the second year of your chosen undergraduate degree, so that you can go on to achieve success at university, in your career and in the world.  

You will study a combination of core and subject-specific modules that focus on teaching you the English language, study skills, employability and academic areas most relevant to your chosen degree at Sussex.

    Study a wide range of business and management-focused modules before progressing on to the undergraduate degree of your choice.

    Choose from a large selection of engineering degrees at Sussex after starting your academic journey with the International Year One.
  • Film and Media
    Combine academic study with practical media experience to gain the skills needed to progress to a media degree at Sussex.
  • Finance and Accounting
    Prepare for a successful career in finance by preparing your undergraduate degree with the International Study Centre.
  • International Relations and International Development
    Gain the knowledge to change the world by studying this highly-ranked subject at the University of Sussex.

We know that you may already be thinking about your future career, which is why we have integrated a careers element into our academic subject modules at the International Study Centre. This will guide you towards making the right choices and give you the tools you need to stand out in the competitive graduate job market.

Assessing your progress

We will assess your progress regularly to ensure you are on track to complete your course successfully, so that you can go on to study your chosen degree at Sussex. For example, you may participate in exams, seminar discussions, group projects, presentations, laboratory practicals, software exercises and essays as part of your overall assessment.

Improve your English

Need to improve your English language or raise your IELTS score? You can study one of our English language courses at the International Study Centre. Choose from English Language Preparation (ELP), studied before the International Year One, or Language Lift – studied simultaneously with your course.
